No debemos confundir los dosieres con los expedientes administrativos, sino que se forman cuando media el interés de acumular información sobre un determinado.

En la mayoría de las oficinas es efímera su conservación, pero existen algunas excepciones
tales como el caso de una Oficina de Información o de un Gabinete de Prensa.

Su conservación en disco óptico es el mejor sistema de archivo de los dosieres. Puede ahorrarse espacio si los documentos seleccionados y que constituyen el dosier, que suelen proceder de expedientes administrativos, recortes de prensa y notas manuscritas, pueden ser escaneados y así conservados en un disco el tiempo que sea necesario para utilizar la información. De esta forma podemos conservarlos incluso si el expediente o la documentación a la que acompañan pasa al archivo de centro y después al histórico.

Los dosieres en soporte papel se ordenarán por materias, por el asunto del que traten, para lo cual hay que establecer un índice con el fin de que tanto la recuperación como la inclusión de un nuevo dossier se pueda realizar de una forma rápida.

Los dossieres pueden incorporar folletos impresos. Bien construidos podrían llegar a convertirse en una fuente importante de conocimiento del municipio en caso de que se trate de archivo de la administración local; y su conservación podría ser interesante en un Centro de Documentación
Municipal.

En ningún caso se conservaría en el Archivo Municipal, recordemos que éste recibir documentos originales, expedientes completos y finalizados. Se nutren de fotocopias de estos documentos, así que su conservación en el Archivo sería redundante.
